Yes I am alive!

Yes! I am still alive & thriving in Honesdale, Pennsylvania!
My new life here and the gallery business is better then I could ever have imagined.
I am just so busy, each day, trying to do it all is challenging, to say the least!
The movies make it look so easy and fabulous!
When the cruel reality of it is:
For those of us with our careers soaring,
It usually means...
the other parts are collapsing!
Stress has become my new middle name,
The family life is in the toilet,
but I have my faith which is stronger than ever!
Hallelujah
I have been put here for a reason!
I love what I do and the gallery is doing great!
Busier than ever, with the finest of artwork from the best artists around!
I am so blessed!
Thank you for your warm comments and well wishes, I so appreciate the support!
Your concerns were true, my silly health issues have been acting up again!
So, I’m back to the Green Goddess Lifestyle! Your warm prayers were appreciated!

The Gallery Life:
I want to introduce you all to “Kathy Showers” my new right arm and great, new friend.
She is partnering with me at the gallery, which means helping me out; holding down the fort while I am being Mommy & just plain human.
What I appreciate above all is that she really cares; having a passion for the arts and desire to create something special here in Honesdale with the community and ART!
She has been there for me; over and above the call of duty!
This is just for her: I would like to say a big, warm, “Welcome and Thank You“ from the bottom of my heart!

New, stunning, Fine Art wear-ables!

Each one is unique, hand tie dyed and then hand printed with the old, overlay with screened printing the art. Yes done the old fashioned way! Each shirt is slightly different then the other.

Is it me or does everyone remember the friends of our youth as being our "whole world?"
They stood behind you through everything!
They were always there!
I will tell you one thing; I still haven’t met that type of friend here in Pennsylvania, yet! I have friends but not those sister types,
I guess it’s my “Jersey” ways, or just me?
Some memories are triggering some sadness this morning…
Just sitting back with a cup of tea, doing the whole facebook deal and I was missing some of my “old” friends…
Oh well, for those of you not here in the North East,
We are snowed in, and of course I live on top of the Mountain…
A little more snow than most! I love it!

They are amazing to say the least. The photograph portrait of an Eagle, is almost four feet square, and perfect. Crisp, clear no pixilation whatsoever! His work is phenomenal, if ever in town, you should see them.

btw: I am working again on my own work! I can't wait to start posting them!
Now, I have an incentive to finally get my camera fixed!

Resolutions

Wow, what a wonderful holiday it has been here in Honesdale, at the PHG!
From the rolling train rides with Santa, hearing the conductor shout “all aboard” to the bustling street fairs, filled with the magical aroma of roasted chestnuts on the outdoor grill... (of the Trackside)
This is that Norman Rockwellish town I’ve dreamed about.
How blessed I have become to have been welcomed into this charming community!
We are still bringing Art of all types to life!
However, to my great disappointment my postings have been few.
Hopes of reviving my daily writing, a new commitment with the New Year!

First, I wanted to share with you the previous month at the gallery.
Our book signing was a wonderful success; the beautiful author Brownyn Mc Enkegry was so charming and delightful. The event was an awesome affair. Tons of great food and so many people came to support her.
The best part for me…
was crawling up with her book the next morning…
Through a snow storm, sipping herbal teas and reading the day away!
There is something truly magical about getting lost in a book.
Being captivated by another time, letting your imagination run loose!
“Book Love – The Birds of Lake Lenape”
Her novel is about our community in the 1800’s,
a small town filled with lovable characters on their own journey, with all the little secrets in tow. I will treasure her book and fondly remember the whole affair for years!
I am honored to have met her. (aka Bonnie)
It is always a pleasure meeting artistic people, especially the ones who are willing to share their love. You can always see the passion in an artist who loves their craft.
It actually becomes contagious;
I wish I could build my whole gallery with artists like that…
Or bottle their enthusiasm!

Our Intern favorite Liz is working with two others on our new project;
A Bi-weekly writing/literature group!
We are all excited!
Looking forward to sharing our adventures here at the gallery again!
Friday night we have our “The Scholastic Arts Regional Show”
From over 2000 entries, there are roughly 200 pieces chosen. Honesdale,
Wallenpaupack, and Western Wayne High Schools will be exhibiting their winning pieces in drawing, painting, mixed media, ceramics, sculpture, photography, digital artwork, fiber, and more!
So, with all of these fine works of art to get ready…
I will be busier than ever! What I love the most, I really enjoy exhibiting the student work. They become radiant when you see their pride showing their work!
I believe it's just good for the soul!

I wish I had a camera fairy who would just fix it, So I could show you all the latest and greatest! I found these photos to share: Two of the works from the upcoming exhibit (John & Bridget Gillian a talented brother & sister) and the others are a new line of shirts, with the works of Charles G. Hey its Liz again [Caroline's blog partner in crime:)] I've taken this photo of the Lackawacken River from a tiny, blue walking bridge hidden away in the town of Honesdale. I was inspired to write the poem that follows because of the beauty of this river. Please, let me know what you think!

An observation

The suns rays
Made up of shinning light
Varying in strength
Shift upon my skin.

They move from me
To the river’s surface
Tinting its colors
While making the water shine.

The sun has the power
Of distinguishing purity
From a modern filth
In all winding waters.

To be powerful and to be safe is great. As Bob Marley would say, “No worries.” To feel invincible, to feel superior, and to feel like you were a steel fence is something that everyone strives to feel. Yet what if you were the railroad track that goes unnoticed behind the metal that’s called a hero? What if you were left to be walked all over by uncaring people? That high and mighty fence just stares at you with a hint of a smile that says, “I’m better than you.” It’s always protecting and always watching. You, on the other hand, just wait. The fence catches wary pedestrians from falling. Yet, you listen for the rumble of a train and feel for the touch of a curious butterfly. Somehow, I would rather be the unnoticed set of railroad tracks than the all mighty fence.

A Picture Of Many Words

May the stones of our past lead us in the right direction. This is one of my favorite hidden spots in Honesdale. It’s only an alleyway, but when alone and stressed this place is great to come to clear my head. Just to think of all the people the stone wall and back of the church have seen and heard is astonishing. When I think of these people, and their stories, I realize that everyone’s life is unique. The old stones of the wall and church tell their stories. You just have to listen.

The windows and glass have been polished,
the cobwebs of Halloween have been dusted away!
I am so excited; The Connections Magazine’s Artscene Show will include the seven artists, featured in the magazine.
My hopes are to see you there; November 4th 5-7pm.
Your warm words, thoughtful cards and letters have been an inspirational blessing!
Although the economy stinks, our doors are busier than ever!
A great sign!
We have made serious cut backs, with great sadness, to our event schedule.
However, I am hopeful for the future.
Again, I want to thank you all for just being there with me… through it all!

A Master Artist - Ron Orlando

Bon jour mon ami!
The work of a talented master, a wildlife genius, artist Ron Orlando has joined the Hone Gallery.
I am so excited and envious of his talent, I have been looking at his paintings for hours and wow, mind blowing! I just keep looking at the canvas with awe. The details are spectacular and not a brush stroke in sight!
You should see these in person!
His paintings are of beautiful and majestic wildlife.
He chalks up his talent to extensive field work and research.
However, this gentleman is accredited and has a long lineage of titles, grants, and awards.
I am a true fan of wildlife art no matter photograph, sculpture or painting.
His work will be exhibited or shall I say...
unveiled during our Connections Magazine Artscene Show on November 4th 5-7pm.
I so wish that you could join us?
I wanted to show you all a peak!
I hope you enjoy his work as much as I do?

Also, I would like to give a great big shout it out to our friends in Germany, Spain, Australia, and Canada! It is wonderful knowing that you are there, and I hope to celebrate together with you soon!

Help Me Keep the Vision Going!

This is my first time trying to raise funds and please forgive me for doing this here.

As you all know, I have a gallery that does tons of free events, classes and demonstrations in Honesdale, PA. We have ALL recently gone through a tough period, first personally with my health and family, and then with funding and grants completely gone, through this horrible recession.
I need to resort to fundraising. I wish to continue doing these great community events and with a little help from everyone I could continue. I don’t wish to change the orientation of the gallery.

If all my friends donated $1.00, we could continue.
Without help and support I will no longer be able to continue these humanitarian projects.

Our past programs, events, shows, and Classes, have included:

Storytelling for the children.
Literature and Poetry for all.
Classical, Blues, and Jazz Music.
Drum Circles.
Dream Workshops.
Drawing Circles: Free Drawing Classes with Live Model .
Our Monthly Free-Demonstrations
Such as past events include; Photography, Sculpture, Jewelry, Special Effects, Zentanlges and Marketing.

Our Youth Incentive Program a monthly, charitable donation of $50.00 in art supplies to local students through an art contest.

Honesdale Harvest Weekend

Our NEPA town became thee artist’s canvas this past weekend…
Not only did we have the killer views…
The sweeping vistas and amazing colors…
The weather was perfect too!
We had our own local "Honesdale Harvest Weekend."
The fun never ended!
From the pet parade, with the cutest of costumes…
On our favorite “four-legged” customers.
To the hot air balloon rides at WLE, and all their happenings too…
There was music, a petting zoo; pony rides galore, cotton candy, candy apples, pumpkins and corn mazes…
Well this could be definitely why; I love the “fall!”

The weekend was busier than ever, with our friend; Leeanna guiding our helm.
I am truly grateful that she bestowed this gift!
Yes, birthday wishes & dreams did come true,
I received a day off!
Good Friends, Champagne, Balloons,
Presents and cards.
It was my birthday!

The beautiful, young lady pictured here is Liz our intern with one of her drawings.
She is also one of my students. I teach a small drawing class to the local kids for two hours, once a week.
I really enjoy doing this. They are a talented bunch of little artists!

I have been going through hell trying to get my camera & digital storage devices to work right.
The stupid thing (camera) cost almost 2Grand, and it is falling apart!
Right after the warranty expired!
I know…
So, then purchased a video camcorder this week and
Well let’s just say I am taking it back to the store!
it’s another piece of poop!
I know I have been promising you the photos from the show…
I hope to bring them to you this coming week.
That nice woman at CVS photo downloads them to a disk for me.
So much for complaining!
The other photo is our new artist Lisa Domiano’s work titled; “Take a little piece of my heart.” This is made from ruby red glass, old, rusty nails and barbed wire.
I can’t wait to see what she brings in next.
The apples are a giclee by Phil Jostrum, a talented local painter. He was the set designer for the Godfather Movies. I still pinch myself we are friends.

2.) YOU CAN ALWAYS CORRECT THE MISTAKES YOU MAKE.

3.) WHAT IS IMPORTANT IS WHAT IS INSIDE OF YOU.

4.) IN LIFE, YOU WILL UNDERGO PAINFUL SHARPENINGS,
WHICH WILL ONLY MAKE YOU BETTER.

5.) TO BE THE BEST PENCIL, YOU MUST ALLOW YOURSELF
TO BE HELD AND GUIDED BY THE HAND THAT HOLDS YOU.

We all need to be constantly sharpened. This parable may encourage you to know that you are a special person, with unique God-given talents and abilities. Only you can fulfill the purpose which you were born to accomplish. Never allow yourself to get discouraged and think that your life is insignificant and cannot be changed and, like the pencil, always remember that the most important part of who you are, is what's inside of you.

So my full apology for not posting Liz’s wonderful work.
I am scheduled to see her tomorrow.

I have awakened from a blur, a cold.
A stressed out, burned out, breakdown of sorts….
I have received what I deserved from running around all ragged and crazy.
4 days of aches and pains, coughing, running nose…
and some visuals that I will most certainly leave out!
A large dose of rest (quite frankly, I didn’t move at all)
What the heck was I thinking!
It never fails, as we all do, especially mothers…
We run ourselves to the ground trying to accomplish the impossible!
Now awakening to my house…being in bed for days, oh no…
Truly frightening!
Now another week just to catch up for being sick,
Am I the only one this happens to?

What makes us come alive?
For me, it is bringing art to life, doing art, creating art, being around art…
Which is why I am so excited to tell you all, about this month’s show:
Four Women of Substance
Gabrielle Feldman, Suzannah Rhea Hadorn, Joan Hill and Nancy Wells.
These women are top notch, the best talent around and I have them showing in my gallery!
This just makes me so excited!
I have butterflies!
Can you imagine…
It’s a dream come true.
I spent all day writing out invitations and going through the mailing list.
I am going to rip the gallery apart and get the place squeaky clean!
It will be approximately my one year anniversary!
I wish you all could join us for this night of celebration.

What a busy season it has been, so far!
All things personal, including family and friends have been put on the back burner…
even my blog! However, disappointing that may be for my social life;
it is wonderful news about how the gallery is doing, it is thriving!
I have met so many wonderful new artists & friends! The gallery keeps growing, evolving and prospering. During the craziest of times!
It is a blessing! “Thanx God!”
As usual, the struggle between motherhood and career are still running full force, rampantly through my mind daily!
All my mistakes…
Like; I have realized how horribly wrong it was to spoil my children by doing everything for them as a stay at home mom!
Especially now, that I need them, to chip in?
I hear comments like "I don’t know how", "It’s not my job", or "other Mother’s do it",
Errr! This drives me insane, I believe it is some type of attention getting, out burst or mechanism! When you know you showed them how do it twenty times already!
Well, now that I got that off my chest!
I know I shouldn’t sweat the little things, but hey:
Life is full of the little things!
They are what make you smile and laugh.
Back to the Art world:
We just had our studio tour. Huge success!
Unfortunately, I couldn’t go on it like last year, I worked right through it.
I am thinking about adding and subtracting some events, I will be giving drawing lessons after school. Hopefully, I will get a student!

Street Fair!

The talented and charming Ann Marie Jones, whose warm heart and soul has kept me going! She is such a pleasure to work with, and talk about talented can you see her drawings? They put me to shame!
Looking forward to this week with Ms. Pat Baker Smith! She will be out front for the Fabulous Fifties weekend Street Fair! Thursday, Friday, and Saturday the local stores will be setting up shop outside with tons of activities for all!

A little photo of the Train going by with all the Antique Cars in the Parade… right behind our gallery is the Honesdale Welcoming Center where the passengers board the Stourbridge Line Rail Excursions. The Great Train Robbery is so much fun! The actors are incredible and so much fun to watch! Last year they even came into the gallery!

Sharing the Written Word at the PHG

A "Night of the Arts" a monthly event where we gather together sharing the written word between music and art!
As you can see we have a nice crowd of people who enjoy this event!
There is something magical that happens when the beauty of the written word combines with music...
Espcially when surrounded by all the great art from the local artisians.
We even have aspiring artists drawing while enjoying the music!

This month at the (July 31st 6-9pm) at the Philip Hone Gallery, we have the Millanville Poets Unlimited sharing their words! the Millanville Poets Unlimited are Tracey Ranze, Sheila Dugan, and Mort Malkin.

Lost

Life comes at us in waves at times…
Of happiness and then of sadness,
There are seasons in our lives that change us.
However, being grateful in all things has become so difficult for me,
Especially at times like this.
Where you loose a family member.
You must trust, for me God.
I pray that each day; I am reminded that the only thing that stays the same is change.
Not to become complacent and remember to enjoy the journey.
To be grateful for each moment of time, appreciate the little things…
All those clichés that we hear over and over again, but never really do,
or at least I didn’t anymore..
I became so self indulged in my own little world of work, work, and more work!
I was loving my life. And then bam!
It all changed.
Life and chores just took over, I am even afraid to come here and share,
Like…
posting my articles… such a cop out.
I am confused about life.
I need to get back to the basics.
My drawing has always been there.
I thought this blog would be about enjoying the journey and sharing it, sorry.
I hope that this dreary post will be the end of it.
I hope that I can find my way again.
This is my formal post, to reclaim my life.

Last week’s First Friday art walk in downtown Scranton provided a motivating abundance of art; the two-artist “Fire and Rust” exhibit at the Artworks Gallery and Studio was a pleasure that further enhanced Scranton’s art scene.

At a time when digital photography is annoyingly everywhere, the large-format, abstract photography reigned triumphant in “Fire and Rust.” Jana Scott is a talented portrait photographer whose first fine art collection is an impressive start. Creating a noteworthy buzz, Scott’s stunning images of rust capture more than meets they eye. The glistening, metallic paper photos are bold and vibrant. The cohesive presentation is more than just a diligent study of rust; it is a visually stunning presentation of color and detail with an underlying meaning.

The implication or theory she infuses throughout her body of work is that one should grasp the real treasures in life, things not seen, like hope, faith and love. Inspired by a spark of creative ingenuity, she totally embraced her vision. She based her theory upon the biblical expression “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” In the words of Scott: “Where is your hope? Is it in material things or spiritual things? What is your time, energy and money spent accomplishing? Are you chasing treasure that will rust away?”

Abstracting a recognizable image into one that is nonrepresentational does not apply to Scott’s collection of photographs. The artist has specifically highlighted the rust, abstracted the forms, and captured the true essence of decay by enlarging and enhancing. Exaggerated size, color and the use of a reflective surface further covey the paradigm similar to archetypes dealing with shinny, bright, objects made of gold being evil. Those particular choices, either subliminal or intentional, lend even more strength to her negative connotation of rusting treasure.

Her streamline vision, technical skills and imagery strongly suggest an educated foundation. Even if one hadn’t known about her intentions, one would still find these works strongly intriguing and resonant. The evolution of her career in fine art, already on the right path with limitless boundaries and choices, make this artist one to watch out for.

Art shouldn’t be viewed alone and admired in isolation, cordoned off from the circumstances which surrounded the creation as the post-Freudian epoch. The conceptual vision of an artist can be an extension of his or her creation. Great artists combine all facets of their own beliefs about spirituality, personal emotions and life experiences into their works.

The technically strong and dramatic works by sculptor Jeff Kuratnick are another example of theories and ideas that permeate into the artwork and run consistently throughout. Although this young and exuberant artist is known as a teacher; clearly he can hold his own in a show, as he does in “Fire and Rust.”

A graduate of Shippensburg University and Keystone College with a bachelors degree in education, Kuratnick’s artistry is also apparent in his teaching style, with concentration given to ceramics and sculpture. His kind and friendly persona make him the perfect choice as Artworks’ special needs teacher.

Easily approached, the artist passionately explained his journey from the heart. Coming from a family of stonemasons, Kuratnick continues the genetic legacy.

Evident in his style, he combines natural, fluid forms with sturdy structures to create beautiful vessels, bowls and tea sets. Kuratnick’s fashioned vessels are similar to brick or stone walls built by the masons he so fondly emulates. His heritage is that underlying factor which runs consistently throughout his vision.

Youthful exuberance was no key to his technical mastery; he displays crisp and clear nuances between the use of tone, color and texture. Also understanding the abundance of glazes and choices to be made, the color was executed masterfully, with cool blues and deep earth tones that further encompass the connection to earth. My only point of contention was that more skill solving should have been exercised on the tray of the tea set.

Both artists will be on exhibit through June 24 at Artworks

ARTISTIC LICENSE: Abstract photos and ‘Exteriors’

Carl Backlund’s photography exhibit “Perceptions in Manhattan” is a cohesive body of abstract, architectural photography. Complex compositions, bold color design and disorienting geometry create a picture of space wherein solid forms become pure abstraction at its finest.

The body of work consisting of 19 color photographs is a visual treasure of abstract art. Large steel shapes, bright colors, billboards and angles compile this exhibit’s subject matter. However unappealing it may sound, the impact is stunning and quite delightful.

Backlund tends to omit any human form; he concentrates solely on the structures, balancing texture, pattern and form with complicated compositions. Transforming the familiar skyscraper’s busy, intricate form into something minimalist and profoundly simple, the city’s essence is truly captured.

Backlund gently plays an ingenious balance of masculine and feminine by using organic shapes and forms either sublimely, through billboard signs, or visually, through form and color. Isolating the subjects’ form and shape with color blocking used by abstract painters is an underlying theme displayed in the photos.

The primary influence of Backlund’s style is abstract art. Abstract photography is not necessarily going to mean the same thing to everyone. Abstract denotes what can be interpreted but not seen. Underlying threads within abstract art are imagination, the subconscious and thinking theoretically. Abstract photography is unique to most types of photography, where the basic rules of accurate focusing and composition hold no value.

The abstract photographer is more like a painter using his creative imagination to create stunning works of art. The artist simplifies the composition down to the essence of strong graphic shapes, color and line to create a work of art which is unique from the original. Leaving more to the imagination, helping us concentrate on texture and color rather than the whole subject. Backlund’s use of fresh color combinations of plum, blue and warm gold tones are more reminiscent of a fine art painting than an architectural photograph.

He frames the prints of pristine quality without glass, allowing the viewer to actualize the vision in its entirety, without the glare and reflection of lights. The only harsh criticism of Backlund’s photographs I have is that they are small. I believe they should be enlarged for even greater impact.

Creating abstract art may appear easy. Patterns appear everywhere in nature and especially with manmade construction, especially architecture. However, creating a great abstract photograph that is original is extremely difficult. Combining conventionally photographic principles, scientific intellect and grounded in visual art theories and principles, Backlund is a true artist.

Backlund’s work will be on exhibit at The Camerawork Gallery through June 28. Located below the Marquis Gallery (515 Center St., Scranton), it’s the vision of three local photographers — Ivana Pavelka, Rolfe Ross and Michael Poster — and is dedicated to hosting exhibitions of fine photography made by local photographers.

Although the talent is top-notch, I would prefer to see these works of art out of the basement hallway and into a larger space, one more fitting for the talent that lies within. However small, the Camerawork Gallery has a part of the Laundry Building, a unique experience in shopping. The vibe is more than a bookstore; it’s a community meeting place which hosts author signings, book discussions, poetry readings, writing groups and gallery exhibitions, including the current artist, Annmarie Ciccarelli.

Worth the climb up to the third floor, Ciccarelli’s “Exteriors” is located at the Anthology Bookstore in the back corner. Ciccarelli’s work is abstract and impressionistic, a blending of artistic styles. If you were to mix the painting styles of Andre Derain and Robert Delaunay, you would have the painting style of Ciccarelli.

Abundant, bright colors dance along the canvases, transforming an exterior vision. The abstract composition includes straight edges and organic shapes. Although there is nothing tangible, the painting hints of a building with life. The paintings are done in acrylic medium.

Ciccarelli is exhibiting more than 12 works all similar in vein, now through June 3.

Prayers for Stephanie

As most of you know, my dear sister in law Stephanie Kimble is suffering.
I love her.
I love her smile,
I love her exuberant personality,
I love her joyful soul,
I love her simple ways of looking at life,
I love her strength,
I admire her.
I can go on and on…
for pages about this wonderful sister.
I am scared, I will miss her,
I write this and ask for prayers all evening long.
In the morning we need a miracle.
Could asking God for a full healing be too much?
She is in terrible pain.
Is that selfish?
No I don't believe it is; there are two beautiful children whom have already lost their father. It is so unfair.
Please Lord send a miracle.

The Gallery Life:

Life at the gallery is going wonderful!
Busier than ever!
I couldn’t have dreamed a better dream.
I have recently added a new artist or two…
Whose work I find exciting.
I am really curious to see how they will be received.
We will be starting a new promotion this week…

Finding time is still a problem,
And of course finding help couldn’t be any harder…
As of today,
I will be revamping the office area,
I need it to be neat and clean!
Now that I have started my other job writing,
Well…
Piles of research materials and books have covered the desk!
It’s time to pack them up and bring to the home office!
Reclaim my desk!
So this week is… “office clutter be gone”

I am reading a new book…
I’d rather be in the studio! by Alyson B. Stanfield.
Which I would like to give a shout it out to the author;
for her quick response, when I had a download issue.
It is absolutely wonderful, in this time and age when someone gets back to you personally! Thank you!
I am excited to receive the book and will be diving right into it!
One of our community group’s leader has asked me to give the local artists some teaching or how to promote/marketing themselves.
So, along with some other resources, I will be trying out some pointers here.
Opinions always welcome.

The last week

What a crazy wonderful week!
This past Saturday night we listened to Coltrane and Ginsburg,
Oh…How I “love” the combination of music and poetry…
I have a phenomenal Jazz band (The Jazz Assassins)playing at the gallery,
and during the breaks the writers speak there words…
with prose, poetry, excerpts from their own novels
and touches from the great masters of literature.
My prayer is that it will be a blessing to others,
that they will be inspired and encouraged on…
to create!
Sunday went even better, I spent the day with family!
A great group of people at the “Side Door” in Milford, PA
A scheduled poker run for my sister ended up being even better;
Enjoying friends from far away, relatives, and met new friends,
It was wonderful!
I spent the day listening to great music, dancing and barbeque!
They raised over $2,300.00!! They rocked it out!
Which led me to Monday Night’s Student Show;
“Connecting Community” where the local high school students from Honesdale interviewed the artists from the Wayne County Arts Alliance.
They created works of pottery to reflect each artist.
I was impressed by their work, they did an outstanding job!
I hope to post the pictures of everything this week!
Unfortunately, all the excitement left me a little under weather,
I am very behind on everything, and for once in my life…
I will be calling for help!

My new project:

As you all know my sister, Stephanie has been diagnosed with stage four cancer.
I have decided to put my energy into a positive endeavor for her plight, and of course those beautiful children too.
I wanted to do a show with the ATC’s and well…
I am!
But as ACEO’s (Art Cards, Editions & Originals)!
The show will be on Friday, July 30th, and I am dedicating it to her, Stephanie!
Raising Funds, for all she is going through!
My goal is 5 ATC drawings a week!
I have asked my artists to join me!
We will be starting the auction price at $1.00 each card, the highest bidder, on each card, at the end of the show will get it!
All the gallery proceeds will go towards helping her with medical costs, food, shelter, basic needs.
Hopefully we can raise a little money to help ease her suffering and have fun while doing it.
I just need to find out the legal stuff this week!
I hope to start uploading the cards as soon as possible…

I have had a day off, and yes, a new woman has emerged!

My silly life:

I am so tired of apologizing for my life’s craziness,
or do I just…
Embrace it and tell you all about it?
I figured why not, you wonderful ladies have been with me from the start and know me better than anyone.
I had gotten news about three weeks ago, my sister in law has stage 4 cancer!
OMG! A big hit, and just growing worse…
even through the Chemo!
It has hit our family big time.
Before this….
She lost her husband a few years ago,
Two amazing children are my niece and nephew.
Besides that…
My husband and I have been going through a major train wreck with our finance since loosing our home for half it’s value, and me starting this silly gallery.
Wow!
I finally said it!
Ouch!
It’s finally out there for everyone to know, my beautiful gallery is growing with leaps and bounds, and my personal life is clasping all around me!
Do I go back to our home in New Jersey?
Help!
Do I just give it up?
Inside…
I just can’t quit, I have never been a quitter!
What is a lady to do?
I am extended to the max now, how do go through this?
How in the face of despair do you continue?
Should I continue?
Do I still believe in miracles to the bitter end?

She grows them in her garden, hallows them out, dries them, and then paints these beautiful pictures on them!

Wow, another month has almost passed and the spring is here!
New artists are arriving daily, and the birds are chirping!
And of course…
good old “Spring cleaning!”
I will be revamping the gallery again,
and all that is dusty will soon be glittering again!

I read this blog last night… ugh!
And I realized….
I posted the same pictures twice!
Talk about absent minded!
I am so sorry…
but also surprised, for no one said anything to me about it!
I am extremely grateful to being this busy!
Like spring the gallery is blossoming before my eyes!
I have been going through a rough time with the home front;
Illness took a toll this year, while again reminding me,

& support in my life!

How one day can change your attitude!

It was almost two weeks my better half was away…

My daughter; Angelina Denaro

I just wanted to post my daughters pictures after she won her first art contest!
She won January’s Student Contest for her plate, at our gallery!
It know it might sound fishy but she was the only entry!
Go figure? Giving away free art supplies and I still don’t get any entries!
Anyway…
Thus the pictures are of me giving her the $25.00 gift certificate and then her going to the
Hanson’s Decorum for redeeming her art supplies!
What a great day to see her so happy buying new supplies!
She got a new drawing pad, a huge painting kit, and these fun paint markers!
I love that she is still using them today!

I am looking forward to this darn snow storm coming in!
I am still ill but….
It has a bright side;
I am finally catching up on some long needed rest!

As you all know; it’s been officially 5 months that I own the gallery!
I thought a lot more would have been accomplished by now!
However, I have begun to realize I am not super woman after all!
Deciding what I want to bring to the community has been one of my major concerns…
and finding out what they would like is a major dilemma.
So my question to you…ALL my friends is:
What would you like a gallery to provide you with

Life’s crazy moments have been replaced with sickness.
I have been fighting this cold for a week, but I guess when you finally take a day off; bam its hits you!
If its not one thing is another!
I am in my Pajamas at the computer at 10am!! My day is half over!!!

I spent this past weekend at Marywood University and attended the openings of two talented artists:
One professor Mark Webber and the Young Artist Series – Rouge Bodies by Ryan D. Ward;
I had a great time. My friends Leslie & Charles Woods (in the photo) and I attended the Gala Opening Reception.
Wow, talk about a great turn out.
The art was inspiring, the company intellectual, and I was in heaven!

Honesdale Mardi Gras

Some fun photos of how things went this last Saturday…
Our charming town of Honesdale had a Mardi Gras Day in which the local businesses dressed up in typical New Orleans’ fashion with fun promotions and themes!
Wow, talk about frozen to the bone!
It wasn’t really a long procession,
each business rounded town at the top of each hour…
Hopefully giving great deals and offers to the community!
When it was our turn to cruise the community, we headed up around 2pm!
But being the artists we are…
All of us dressed up and participated in the hoopla, I was Alice in Wonderland, Donie and Josie were the Queens of Hearts, and our Jessica was the Jack of Hearts!
Our mission was to raise awareness about the Wayne County Arts Alliance’s
Alice in Wonderland Tea Party Fundraiser!
Our beautiful Queen and her little Miss Josie handed out “Candy with invitations to the event.”
I should have gotten a close up of her outfit it was so cute with matching crowns…
We drove up and down the town in a golf cart…
with a little decoration.

We gave it our best try…
I don’t think I came close to looking anything like Alice!
However I had great fun, a lot of laughter, a little self promotion and of course another unforgettable experience with good friends!
I really like this Jess she is a firecracker of a woman, lovely, smart, and charmingly elegant to watch! A big heart and a super volunteer!
Honored to call her my new friend!

We even made the local news!

Sorry I haven’t been blogging away, life has just gotten the best of me lately…
My personal life has gone through hell; with my father’s heart attack, and a whole bunch of craziness at home, I am working hard at catching up! I hope to get back to all of your wonderful letters and comments!

Feeling under the weather today, in bed all day, however just helping a good friend get the word out for a really, great event in our community:

HONESDALE HELPS HAITI CONCERT
Sunday, January 24 from 5-7PM (Snow date Sunday 1/31 from 1-3PM)
Grace Episcopal Church
827 Church Street , Honesdale , Pennsylvania
Suggested donation $10 at the door.

Three local musicians, Janet Burgan, Stephen Faubel and Kazzrie Jaxen have teamed up to play a concert to benefit the earthquake victims in Haiti . Stephen and Kazzrie will be performing on Grace's beautiful 1903 Steinway Model O baby grand piano. Janet will be singing and playing guitar. Please join us and make a difference for our Haitian brothers and sisters. Come for part or all of the concert. Let's show Haiti that Honesdale cares!!

All donations will be sent to Episcopal Relief & Development.

Episcopal Relief & Development has disbursed emergency funding for its program partner, the Diocese of Haiti, to help meet immediate needs such as food, water and shelter. The agency is standing ready to support the Diocese with post-earthquake recovery and rebuilding efforts and is partnering with the Diocese of the Dominican Republic to coordinate efforts that can be administered from the border areas. The Diocese already has staff in place and relationships with the Episcopal priests across the border. As communications and access improve, Episcopal Relief & Development will continue to provide updates.

Last night’s Drum Circle

Last night’s Drum Circle

The day started off crazy;
Had to go to the bakery,
had to dismantle the last show
and take in a ton of new work!
Prepare for the event;
Cut the fruit and veggie platters,
all the meats and cheeses,
Normal event fair!
And then…

My wonderful son…(10) Geno, spilled a Mc Donald’s Chocolate Shake right on the floor, in the center of the gallery!
While I was getting ready!
Yikes! I threw a major Hissy Fit!
My poor husband took the brunt of my anger!
So sorry babe!
Quickly escorting all the children out the door…
The mess was quickly cleaned just as two artists were walking in!
Whew!
Some how I regained my composure…
And..
The event turned out great!
I am so excited to say:
What a FUN Time!
Tonight when my daughter comes home;
I hope to upload the pictures to the Facebook and Website…

In the meantime;

According to national surveys in 2004, 2007, and 2008, art in healthcare facilities—hospitals, in particular—can reduce the length of hospital stays, need for medication, and number of complications. Coupled with increased staff retention, that means hospitals have more to gain from displayed art than better moods: Thoughtfully selected and exhibited images have measurable economic benefits.

It took them long enough to figure out what we have always known deep within us!
That Art Heals Us!
Just showing up and drawing for an hour has always been nurturing for my soul!
Being snowed in today; what a great experience…
It’s hard to believe that a little over a year ago, I was stuck in bed unable to move, gout in my legs, my hands were swollen, etc…
Life was a mess!
But then…
God ~ Thank you for healing me and bringing me back to my Artwork!
I know it was just sketching each day, but it is really wonderful to see how far God has brought me back to health!
and of course: a great, supporting family helps too!

I would sincerely love to thank everyone for their most precious words of encouragement! You are my dearest friends and through these times I have
learned just how much you really mean to me!
My father recently had a heart attack; and was hospitalized and….
twice removed himself from the hospital!
He is over 2 hours away,
The getting back and forth,
and then managing the children,
and finally the gallery….
With all the craziness I am not sure what each day will bring,
living from moment to moment,
a little good news...
I have recently met a young man, (from Penn State)
who will be “our” intern at the Philip Hone Gallery.
He starts tomorrow!
I hope this will allow me to finally get the work done I need to!
Today is full of errands and running around!
I have a whole lot of Christmas to take down this week!
Three new artist’s work to hang, and more interviews!
Press releases etc…
Again, I thank you all for your blogs, friendship and continued support!
Thou we are so many miles away…
I have never felt as blessed as I have since making precious

You all know it’s the Season! How I love it!! However, I have been so busy, busy, busy!
I miss talking with you all more than you can imagine! The artist community is growing with leaps and bounds. I am challenged to figure out how to do this all!

I have a show Dec. 17th Thursday 5-7pm. Hope I can get some new work done!
I will try to post my work for you to see. Until then here is a little tidbit for the gallery’s website something I am truly excited about….the work of Olivia Tolson, so I have written this introduction and have decided to post it here too. Ideas and Opinions always wanted!!

The Philip Hone Gallery proudly announces the arrival of: The Olivia Tolson’s Collection. We now have the long awaited, highly desirable, hand carved ornaments from Olivia. A local favorite during Christmas time, all her work is meticulously hand carved and hand painted. See Photos…
On a more personal note about Olivia Tolson; I was struck by this talented woman from the first moment I met her and her family. A strong Pennsylvanian whose intelligence and talent combined with down home tradition, with a dash of a sincerity, she is undeniably the back bone of this country.

A true artist; whom I admire. Talent like a stream runs swift and deep within the generations of this family. Her daughter is our own Patty Baker Smith whom enlightens and inspires me. Patty is also a talented artist, mother, and savvy business woman with outstanding skill and talent. (Remember the conchs I carry) I carry a large variety of her work! I hope to emulate this family’s creativity within my own family. These women are symbolic of all that continues to spark the public’s interest in original folk art from Pennsylvania; quality, originality, beauty and the magic of imagination.
These treasures are rare, and will last for many a generation. Each piece is signed and original. I fully understand the demand for these precious pieces; if you are interested please come in this week; I can’t promise they will last.

I am truly having the best time but it’s getting so busy! Dividing my time between the artists and clients has left me with no time at all for doing anything for myself. So, I am truly looking forward to meeting all the new applicants and interns.

This week I was approached by an unsavory fellow who argued with me the cost of a photograph when actually he said “it is the same as a poster...”
Yeah right… Modern point and shoot person!
Why do some photographers demand more money?
Then again…
The old question is even Photography Art?
I believe this question has been argued to death!
My opinion: I believe 100% photography is fine art.
Matter of fact! Worth every penny! Which brings us back to another classic argument of what is fine art? Let’s not go there….
What makes you happy? Is what you buy!
The average joe knows not the intricacies of the evolution of modern photography
Educated eyes are not my everyday customer…
Maybe I could slap them in the head; and start to explain what being an artist means...
But then again; why bother?
But why beat a dead dog?
the mind the reasoning, being an artist, and what art truly is, will be argued forever.
My point is we are all artists in our own way….

I started the day running in full speed with the little ones..
I had a little witch, a ninja, a hippie and a big baby!!

Our day was full of on and off rain!
The children weren’t out like they used to be!

We found out rather late, our town put out an order

Looking forward to Harvest & Heritage Days!
This weekend we will be having a blast!! The trees are turning into their spectacular fall colors, hayrides, pumpkins, cornstalks and scarecrows…October 10th from 9-5pm and October 11th 9-4pm!

Strolling down the sidewalks …and tons of craft vendors!
A year ago, this weekend I found out all about Honesdale. I was so impressed with all the great stuff!
I was determined to start doing something for myself!
Thus… the beginning of “my journey to Neverland,” who would have guessed how great this turned out!
Wow!... little would I know I would have a store here!
What a wonderful detour in my life!
I love every minute here in this charming town, the people are great and the scenery is… breathtaking at this time of year!
I wish I wasn’t working this weekend, I’d love to join you, there are a ton of fabulous new shops all over town!
Either way… Weather prevailing; the events are great for the children, and the shopping is even better for mom! Just some of the great things going on in Honesdale this weekend:

What a day! I’ve received my official papers! Life at the gallery is going crazy great!
I have the best artists ever! Meeting all these talented artists, has been the best part of this journey.

I am so grateful for all the help and encouraging words from everyone.
My memory is jumbled and a big blur! I think all the smiling and laughing I did this week went to my head.
So if I didn’t thank someone… I would like to now; thank you, and especially a big THANK YOU to Donnie Schmidt!
Today we managed to do an inventory of the storage room, a huge help to me.
A little angel I know… sent her to look over me or is it the gallery? Either way her hard work is greatly appreciated.

Later on in the day, Charles and John stopped in. They kept me on my toes with their charming banter, and all their suggestions are appreciated too.
PS…Someone remind me to stock the refrigerator again.

I have started booking events for the next two months, interviewing the interns, still so much to do…

I am so pleased with how our first class turned out!!

All the hard work is starting to payoff; the gallery looks great. I am proud to say I now have another five artists! New beautiful stained glass; two new jewelers, a phenomenal group of artists! I am so privileged to have them all with me.

I finally found the cord to the camera! Yeah!
I am posting my new work here for you to see first…
I have worked about 20hours on this drawing… in between moving out of Neverland and into the Gallery… while getting ready for the Connection’s show.
I had grand visions of finishing a lot more work than I did. I now fully understand all your warnings about owning your own business!

This weekend rocked!
Saturday’s Fireman’s Parade and the Willow River Gallery’s Show (Which I heard was a great success!!) drove site-seers and fans to our gallery too!

Our Youth Encouragement Program starts today!
Deadline September 30, 2009

A Monthly Art Contest!
Philip Hone Gallery is proud to announce our monthly Art Contest for our young adults; ages 10-20. With grand expectations we hope to inspire our youth to creatively use there mind and reach for new mediums and experiences through ART. Each month we will post a new topic.

September: Wisdom

Second, the student should consider which type of medium from painting to sculpting to do their artwork in. All forms of art will be excepted as long as they can provide an artist statement. Accompanying the entry should include the artist statement: a brief paragraph on how your artwork pertains to the topic. Please include all relevant information on the artist statement: name, age, title of work

All artwork must be brought into the Philip Hone Gallery and Artist Statement.
(Framing is only required when it is the winning entry)

Judging will take place the day after, the last day of each month.
We will have a new guest judge, monthly!

The winner will be notified each 5th of the month.
Their exhibit at the Philip Hone Gallery will last until the 5th of the next month.

There will be a monthly award of $25.00 in Art Supplies, Certificate of Achievement, and a prominent space in the Philip Hone Gallery for the full month after until the next winner is announced.
First and second place winners are chosen from each level from the entries received.
The first place winner will need to have their work ready for exhibiting.
Both the first and second place winners will be eligible to have their work chosen for the year end art show.
There is a $5.00 entry fee per artwork entered.

The final winner will receive all the money raised from the entry fees.
All images will be used for publicity and promotion of the Philip Hone Gallery.
We will remain open late on Friday night until 6 pm.
We hope to see a wide spectrum of submissions.

Never enough hours in the day! Exhaustion setting in on these old bones…
Sorry ladies! I did have grand visions of myself running home after work effortlessly making dinner and tucking the kids in bed!
How does reality differ from the real thing! Two days of moving and my body is aching and more still needs to get done! About thirty trips up and down the stairs and I am exhausted! Running home to dinner; Huh that was just as fun, even with prep work at 5am, I am just getting to sit down to the computer now at 9:30! Anyway… I am supper grateful of this mean steak Johnny brought home yesterday. It has been so long since we had steak!! Hotdogs and macaroni can drive anyone insane! Than I did my cleaning up after dinner and now; more laundry too!
To all you strong woman I admire so much; How do you do it?
I stink at this! How am I supposed to make it through? Where can I find the working mom’s bible? Or a how to that works?
Well now that I got that out! I would like to say; “sorry” that I haven’t kept up with my posting. I am so jealous of all your progress…

My first entry for our Youth Encouragement Program, Our own Rachel Gorman and her entry is entitled: “Bodhi Tree”

Her Paragraph explaining the submittal:

“My piece is inspired by Buddhism and its traditions. Historically; the Bodhi tree is a sacred fig tree in India. Under this tree the founder of Buddhism, Siddhartha Gautama, first achieved enlightenment. Enlightenment is spiritual wisdom enabling clarity of perception. Wisdom can mean many different things as and can be achieved in many areas. However, enlightenment encompasses the idea of observing the world around you; perceiving life through all of your senses and understanding its meanings.”

I think this contest is going to be such a fun experience for the students and myself!
Starting the contest off with a great piece! kudos go out to Rachel.
Keep an eye out for our young Rachel Gorman; we have her work coming to the PH Gallery and it rocks!!

Drawing Circle~the begining

Sometimes in life you just need to sit back and enjoy!
And I believe this will be my niche, my little something! My night out!
As you all know I love drawing and socializing!
What better way to celebrate being an artist then being with good friends
and doing what you love!
I am sure that in time this will grow to be a treasured event.
The night was a first for me. I had a wonderful time and learned a lot!

For those who aren’t familiar with what the drawing circle is:
I host a night for my artists…
Where we come together for drawing, we have a clothed model, and enjoyable music… and we just sit back with our sketch pads and draw!
I have iced tea and fresh coffee brewing with pastries, cake, cookies and fresh fruit!
And for those of us who wish… wine is available for a donation.
There is no fee, but I do ask for everyone to donate a tip to the model….

I had one great weekend.

My father came up to visit, I got nothing accomplished, but I nourished my soul! I made a big, Italian Sunday Dinner and just got done with dishes! I am uploading some pictures…. One is of my daughter in the hospital, a photo of her from the Emily’s Boutique photo shoot, and my drawing of her.
It’s not finished yet; but those who know me, I suffer from that artist thing where I hardly ever finish! Is there anyone else… this way?

Vincent Van Gogh Cypresses 1889
While I am home and not at the gallery, I continue my studies with Van Gogh.

I find his work and life fascinating.

The movement within the tree and landscape continues to impress his sheer genius upon me.
I thought you might enjoy it.

This painting was done while he was a patient in the asylum at Saint-Remy.
Which gives me plenty of encouragement!
That which does not kill us…
makes us stronger!!

I am so honored to have such great people working with and for us!
We had a little family crisis this past week, my daughter Ashley was suffering with sever pains and rushed to the hospital, where they discovered that her appendix had ruptured. I was at the Gallery working away for the Connections Mag. Show when I heard the news. Suddenly my life became a crazy mess! Rushing between my daughter & the show became almost more than I could handle. But I am happy to report that all is well!
My Ashley came out of Surgery, a success, and after a day of hospital rest she is home today.
My great friends Bob Nell and Jim Rickert came to my rescue and did the show for me. I am so grateful for having met these awesome guys!
They entertained and worked their butts off.
I would also like to acknowledge my new good friends who also helped me put together the show: Ms. Patty Baker-Smith and Donnie Schmidt!
I am excited with the new direction we are taking. I believe you will all enjoy the new Art at the Gallery!

I met this really talented mother her name is Patty! I am so excited...

I have to talk about her!!! She might become my newest artist?
She also has 4 kids and an artist!!!! Today was part of the open studio tour put on by the Wayne County Arts Alliance.
Its like holy shoot it really could happen, I have found my mentor, the problem is; she is too young…. Hardly a day older than me, but miles ahead of my time.
I really admire her. Anyway here is her link. A fantastic artist her work totally rocks….

All of her work is done by hand, wood carving and all. The pictures don't do any justice for her work. When you see the paintings in person, its like WOW!!

I believe she will be the star in my Gallery.

At the Gallery…
The day was great, my little Angelina(7) came with me, we spent the morning coloring! It is really wonderful spending a day at work with your daughter. I never had a job where my kids were welcome. I finally started sketching, I did a nude woman this morning…A nice change from the craziness!

I am going to look for intern’s come September, just a little notice before the launch, incase someone out there wants to give it a shot.
Today I met two of the watercolor artists for the Connection Magazine’s show on Thursday the 6th , (5-8pm) the event will rock! I am so excited and wish I could download some photos of the works, but sadly…. I’ll have to wait till the 7th to show you all.
I do want to say that these women; Catherine Phillips and Barbara Briden couldn’t have been any nicer. It is so refreshing to meet talented artists with charming personalities including modesty! I truly understand the need for tooting your own horn, but sometimes I wonder if people are talking to me, or just enjoy hearing about themselves?
They both are self taught; and have done “en plein aire”!! as you all know my favorite.
Barbara is well traveled; which is evident in her new pieces, two stolen moments of time; the shear skill of doing groups of people in watercolor with no mistakes!!! AH! She rocks it out of the park. Again, I am so happy to have these woman at the show, and truly enjoying promoting & supporting other woman who have learned it the hard way!! DOING IT themselves!!
I can’t say enough about meeting other artists and doing this for a living… I have my dream job, I just hope God will be with me. Another month to go… and we will find out!

These are some shots of the Gallery; I hope you can get a feel for the place. I have three display cases (glass) which need to be filled with ART!!! I am 86ing(getting rid of) the small toy antiques and crap. I hope to find the right people and fill them with phenomenal work!
Today was an adventure of sorts, I had 3 interviews and one audition.
I am really enjoying the journey, today! I was treated to a great musician, and some amazing watercolor paintings…
I have a new favorite artist her name is Barbara Briden, well traveled, intelligent, and above all kind. Her work will be in the August issue of Connections Magazine, and in our show August 6th 5pm-8pm. I would love to see some familiar faces (YOU) for my first show! Sincerely Caroline

Crazy and Desperate Artist

It’s been a supper busy week, thank God! If I didn‘t stay busy, I think doubt would set in? I keep trying to figure out how I can do everything! As you all can guess by now, I am tired!
Real tired!! and things are about to get crazier...
The kids are still rebelling, and the money, what money!!
Speaking of money….
I am announcing another first for me; “to my great support system, my blogger friends”
I am so honored to have been chosen by all the partners, especially by Bob and Jim, the two guys who renovated the gallery and started this great venture. Not only will I be running it; I will own it!!

They wanted to move on...
and I said Yes, come September it will be really mine!!!!
And then…
After I said yes and told everyone this week, when all the noise stopped, and I had a moment to think,
All I could think was; how crazy I am!
I love supporting the artists and being there, but will they all leave now?
Will I fall on my face?
I believe this is where I should be, but what the hell am I doing?
That wonderful little devil called doubt!

I truly believe this is a gift from GOD.
How else could this happen?
I have to believe there is a plan!
So… I hope I can make the gallery all it can be.
As we all know there are two other great galleries that just opened, both with tons of experience! About a month ago, I lost some artists to them, but God opened another door and sent me some real great talent.
My plan is to be myself and put my studio in the back of the Gallery. I will paint there, while I am there daily, and hopefully more often…
I am going to keep it open as long as possible. (Greater chance for the artists to get seen)
Regarding my studio.
Sigh!
I am sad that I have to let it go…I don’t believe I can carry both! Or maybe God will send another miracle?
I sent a letter to the Alliance, my attempt to save it! Looking for artists who might want it? I put so much hard work into it. It would be wonderful if someone could appreciate it like me.
I would sub-lease it for $400.00. That is because I would want to keep the office.
Three rooms with plenty of light, great location…
Artist and Business (aren’t they opposites)
and a parent too!!!
